LOS ALTOS LUXURY

Los Altos Luxury

Covington - Climate-Responsive Planting Design for a Renewed Los Altos Garden

Welcome to our most luxurious project, where we transformed the outdoor space with a vibrant selection of plants that bloom throughout the year. Our design features stunning additions like Bush Anemone, Iris, Ceanothus, and Salvia, providing a colorful palette that enhances the beauty of the entry and poolside areas. We also ensured the existing elements, such as the pool and paving, harmonize with our new plant selections. With thoughtful irrigation already in place and an aesthetic pruning of the roses ordered, this space is now a flourishing retreat you'd love to see.

Covington is a residential landscape renovation in Los Altos that transforms an aging garden into a vibrant, climate-responsive outdoor living environment defined by layered planting, seasonal color, and seamless integration with the home’s architecture. Rather than replacing the landscape outright, the design approach focused on renewal—working thoughtfully with existing conditions and established plantings to create a garden that feels refreshed, cohesive, and timeless.

The clients’ primary goal was to reimagine their outdoor space with flowering shrubs and vines that would bring life, softness, and year-round interest to the property. They envisioned a garden that felt abundant yet controlled, colorful yet sophisticated—something that elevated daily living while remaining practical and sustainable in the Bay Area climate. DesignIntent responded by creating a planting-forward design strategy that balances beauty with performance, ensuring the garden thrives as effortlessly as it looks.

The site presented a unique set of environmental challenges. Certain areas of the property experienced intense, direct sun exposure for much of the day, while spaces near the kitchen remained heavily shaded. These contrasting microclimates required a nuanced horticultural approach. Instead of forcing a one-palette solution, the design carefully matched plant communities to each zone. Sun-loving flowering shrubs and resilient Mediterranean species anchor the brighter areas, delivering bold texture and color without excessive water use. Meanwhile, shade-tolerant varieties soften the kitchen garden and patio edges, creating lushness where light is limited. This climate-specific planting strategy ensures every part of the garden performs optimally while maintaining visual continuity.

The planting design extends throughout the property, weaving together the pool, patio, kitchen garden, and entry sequence into a unified landscape experience. Around the pool terrace, layered greenery provides both privacy and softness, framing views while cooling the space visually. The patio becomes an intimate outdoor room surrounded by textured foliage and seasonal bloom. Near the kitchen garden, productive plantings mingle with ornamentals, reinforcing the connection between everyday living and the landscape. At the entry, carefully curated shrubs and vines establish an inviting first impression, guiding visitors naturally toward the home.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Covington is how new planting integrates with the existing garden. Rather than removing mature plants or starting from scratch, the design intentionally pairs fresh selections with pre-existing vegetation. This creates continuity and maturity from day one, avoiding the stark look of newly installed landscapes. The result is a garden that feels as though it has always belonged—evolved rather than replaced.

Planting also plays an important visual role in softening and modernizing the site’s older hardscape. Outdated paving, instead of being fully demolished, is partially reframed by lush planting beds and strategic greenery. Vines, shrubs, and groundcovers blur edges, reduce visual heaviness, and help the hard surfaces recede into the background. This approach not only improves aesthetics but also reflects a sustainable mindset—reusing existing materials where possible and minimizing unnecessary construction.

Throughout the design, sustainability is embedded as a guiding principle. Plant selections emphasize drought tolerance and climate adaptability, reducing irrigation demands while supporting long-term resilience. Thoughtful soil preparation and grouping plants by water needs improve efficiency and simplify maintenance. These strategies create a garden that is environmentally responsible as well as visually rich.

Ultimately, Covington demonstrates the power of planting design to transform space. Through careful observation, climate awareness, and artistic layering, the project turns an uneven, aging yard into a cohesive outdoor retreat. It is a landscape built not around flashy features, but around living systems—flowers, vines, textures, and seasonal change working together to create beauty.

The result is a Los Altos garden that feels welcoming, balanced, and deeply connected to place: a renewed outdoor living environment where architecture and nature blend seamlessly, and where every corner offers something to discover.
