BURLINGAME BOUNTY

Burlingame Bounty

Burlingame Bounty is a residential landscape design that celebrates connection, seasonal vibrancy, and functional outdoor space. In this project, the owners envisioned a garden that felt inviting, sustainable, and playfully oriented toward family life—one where both everyday moments and special gatherings become richer through intentional design. The Burlingame Bounty garden thoughtfully addresses spatial flow, plant selection, and visual interest so that form and function work in harmony.

At the heart of Burlingame Bounty is the idea of connection. Rather than letting the outdoor space exist as a series of disconnected zones, the design uses walkways and stairs to articulate purposeful movement through the garden. These circulation elements create a natural sequence of experience—leading the eye, encouraging exploration, and linking varied areas of use. Smooth transitions help unify the space, ensuring that it feels cohesive rather than segmented.

One of the standout features of this garden is a custom-designed playhouse perched on the upper level. Rather than treating it as an afterthought, the design team placed it for maximum visual impact and usability. From this elevated position, the playhouse offers delightful perspectives over the lower gardens—connecting children’s play with landscaped beauty and reinforcing the idea that every part of the yard should feel engaging. The playhouse becomes both a destination and a quiet focal point, adding charm and purposeful scale to the overall composition.

Planting strategy was central to the success of Burlingame Bounty. The owners requested a garden that would feel vibrant across seasons while also being aligned with local climate considerations. The solution emphasized native planting with Mediterranean drought-tolerant species. This pairing achieves multiple goals: it strengthens the garden’s ecological performance, reduces long-term water demand, and produces a tapestry of color, texture, and form throughout the year.

Native species provide resilience and habitat value; they thrive in Burlingame’s coastal-influenced climate and adapt well to seasonal swings. Mediterranean selections bring visual richness—flowering at different times and contributing structured foliage that complements the dynamic layout of the garden. Together, this planted palette ensures that the garden remains both ecologically sound and aesthetically compelling.

In the earlier incarnation of the space, raised vegetable beds had served practical use. However, as the design evolved, the decision was made to shift from strictly utilitarian beds toward annual plantings that deliver more consistent visual appeal. This change reflects a thoughtful balance between function and beauty: while vegetable beds are valuable and productive, seasonal annuals allow the garden to present a curated aesthetic that delights throughout the year.

Beyond planting, sustainability and performance were design priorities. Mediterranean and native plants are water-wise by nature, helping to reduce irrigation needs while supporting soil health. This approach aligns with Bay Area design sensibilities, where drought tolerance and environmental stewardship are essential considerations. Grouping plant communities in sensible, climate-appropriate palettes also simplifies maintenance and improves long-term garden resilience.

Hardscape elements were resolved with an emphasis on longevity and legibility. Pathways and stairs are not only functional, they help define outdoor rooms and transition spaces seamlessly. Materials were chosen for durability and ease of navigation, creating circulation that feels intuitive and welcoming. These paths enable fluid movement from one area of the garden to the next, strengthening the sense that every corner of Burlingame Bounty is intentionally shaped.

At a broader level, Burlingame Bounty exemplifies a core principle of good landscape architecture: make outdoor spaces that are living, evolving, and alive with richness. Every design decision—whether it’s where a stair lands, how a plant group is arranged, or how a playful structure is placed—contributes to a cohesive experience that supports both everyday use and special moments. The result is a garden that feels personal and joyful, rich with texture, well-defined flow, and enduring investment in beauty and sustainability.

In Burlingame Bounty, outdoor living is not an add-on or leftover yard space—it is a thoughtfully composed environment, knit together by connection, ecological intelligence, and purposeful design. It’s a garden that delights at every turn and invites people to live outside as naturally and comfortably as they do inside.
